Hotstar’s Android TV is set to provide feasibility for users across India, Canada and UK.

Hotstar launches Android TV App in India, Canada and the US

Users of Hotstar, India’s very own video streaming application had vehemently been demanding for an Android TV application since a long time. Paying heed to user preferences and in a bid to join the ranks of a few others, Hotstar has now launched its own Android TV application.

Before the launch of the application, users had been using Chromecast, among many other devices, to ensure that they got the Hotstar experience on their TV. The application can be downloaded via the Google Play Store in the US, Canada and India.

Hotstar’s application for Android TV is extremely similar to the Android TV OS interface itself, as it hosts rows of tiles separated by visible content headers. You can enjoy the same sections that are present on the website, such as: TV, Movies, Premium, News, Sports, Channels, Genres and Languages.

The general layout is easy to understand and will present no complexity for users to stream through. On the contrary, the individual section for TV shows can be a bit confusing for new users. After you pick or select one of the sections from the list of TV shows, you will be directed to a screen which displays all of the available episodes in separate rows.

While all other episodes are conveniently placed, the latest episode seems to be missing from the list. Rather than being on the list with all other episodes, the latest episode has its own click button with, “Watch latest episode” written on it.

When it comes to quality and preferences, you can flex with your ability to select picture quality and subtitles while you are going through an episode.

The latter can be set at 1080p, if you have a fast internet connection to cater to the increase in quality. Although most people won’t be able to comprehend it yet, Hotstar on Android TV comes with a metric to estimate the GB’s you will consume over an hour of video streaming.

The search feature is very basic, but helps serves its immediate purpose. By inputting individual letters, you can get to where you want.

There is no voice search option available yet and, unlike Netflix, Hotstar does not remember, or remind you, what you were watching last. This can be annoying for users who have become accustomed to Netflix, among other streaming platforms.

Although quite a lot is missing from the application currently, the mere existence of a Hotstar Android TV application is a form of relief for many users.

We do expect all minor glitches to be resolved in the coming updates, for users to enjoy a seamless, Omni-platform experience in the future.
