How to reduce mobile data usage on Android

We tech junkies love exploring new things and for that we need our internet connection all the time. Unfortunately, these connections do not come cheap.

In fact, the unlimited data plans are so expensive these days that I am always scared of exceeding my monthly data allowance – something I am sure you can relate with.

I have been searching and searching to find ways through which I can reduce my mobile data usage and I am glad to tell you that I was successful. Read on to learn how you can reduce your usage of mobile data on Android in the easiest manner possible.

Chrome Pages – Compress Them

I tried it and I can guarantee that it actually works. If you use Chrome for all your web traffic then believe me you can easily save up to 30-35 percent of your mobile browser data consumption.

When you use the Data Saver option, the web pages are compressed before they are loaded in the browser.

It is true that Data Saver slows things a bit, but come on – a few moments delay is fine if you can make your data last so much longer.

All you have to do is launch Chrome, click the three dots situated on the top right-hand corner, now you will scroll down to Settings and then to Data Saver. If you want to be really happy then just keep a watch on graph to see your data savings grow.

Get rid of the Facebook app

If you are a true blue tech junkie like me and love your Android device then this should be common knowledge to you already that Facebook app is one of the biggest data consumers out there.

Facebook app is heavy and therefore drains a lot of battery and it is high resource use as well. This is why you can replace it with something less demanding.

Try a web app or Chrome shortcut for Facebook

If you search you will find a lot of alternative Facebook apps but let me tell you that these are as hungry as the original one. Facebook Lite, which proudly claims to cut down your consumption of data by almost half also, eats up hundreds of MB in a month.

Try Tinfoil for Facebook – this is a web app which displays the Facebook site. Or you can also create a Chrome shortcut in your web browser.

Get Opera’s video compression

If you are unaware then let me tell you that Opera for your Android browser comes with a very useful video compression option. If you are a big video watcher than this is a great option for you.

All you need to do is download the Opera browser. To do this go to Settings> Data savings and tick the box which says Video compression.  When you go for this setting you not only save data but your videos are more likely to load faster.

Take advantage of offline games, apps and services

There are a lot of apps as well as games on your Android that cannot do without internet access. A lot of time this is just a security measure while other times it can be because a particular app or game needs to retrieve data.

This is why you should start using games and apps that do not require internet access at all once you have downloaded them.

Save up music on your phone

If you are a big user of streaming services like Spotify, YouTube or Vine then you need to change that as these video and music sites are big data killers.

We all have our favorite songs and tunes that we listen constantly, if you have something like that then you should just load these songs in your phone so that you can listen to them even when you are offline. A much better option than streaming it from the web.

If you do not have a microSD card, you can use a microSD adapter

In case your phone does not have a microSD card or space in its internal memory to save music, you can also use a microSD adapter. Saving your music for offline listening does not require a lot of space on your device and you can also replace it or get rid of it when you want.
