Xiaomi Redmi 1S

Xiaomi Redmi 1SThe Xiaomi Redmi 1S which is also known as the Xiaomi Hongmi 1S was exclusively supplied across India via Flipkart and there were two sales which happened earlier this month. The first one was on the 2nd September 2014 and the second on 9th September 2014. There were many who were disappointed as they missed the buy upon which looking at a “Out of Stock” pop-up. There is no need to worry as the Chinese company is letting out one more flash sale via Flipkart today which is already over. We received the Xiaomi Redmi 1S on 11th September 2014 and have been working on it to provide all the knowledge, know-how and recommendations for the same.

The Xiaomi Redmi 1S is a righteous competitor to the Moto E and Micromax Unite 2 among many others. The device sports a large 4.7 inch display screen with a screen resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels. On the inside is a juice pumping 2050 mAh battery that caters the power to the 1.6 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor that is backed by 1GB of RAM. The photo and media angle is what is shocking people as the device has a 8MP primary camera with a BSI Sensor and a 1.6MP secondary camera that captures wonderful and bright selfies even in low light conditions.

Packaging (IN THE BOX) :

To start of with we can’t say that Xiaomi has followed the footsteps of Samsung in terms of packaging as they have added more features to most of it. In terms of the box, the Redmi 1S is placed in a box which is made out of recycled materials an can support as weight of 300 pounds when lying flat. We have tried to place equal amount of weight on it and it is true. Nested beneath the first layer where the handset is placed is the USB cable and adapter which can be combined and used to charge the device. Along with the same there are Instruction Manuals in English ad Chinese. The first sale was fantastic as the company has added to freebies (2 micro-SIM adapters and 3 screen protectors). The orange battery is packed in a nice small pocket bag. Sadly, the Xiaomi Mi3 and the Redmi 1S do not come in-the-box with earphones (can be bought separately).

Design and Build:

The Xiaomi Redmi 1S is much bigger than the Moto E in size and has a better finish in terms of smoothness and edge comparisons. It has been kept very simple and compact with not many buttons jetting out from the sides. Taking into consideration the volume rockers and the power button, they are all plastic with a silver coat paint which is very smooth again. If you are using the device for prolonged hours, there is a chance that you will unknowingly press the buttons which either results in a Power Off pop-up or volume increase or decrease which is nothing major. The company has done a neat job by not inserting those hard buttons below the screen but again kept it simple by adding a sort of a neon colour that looks fantastic during the day but cannot be seen (not lit with LED) in the night or dark areas. The 4.7 inch display screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 312 ppi is just what was needed and considering the price, it’s great.

Flipping open the back cover (plastic – not like the metal cover of the Mi3), you will see the orange battery (inserted at the time of the review) above which will be two SIM slots and a micro-SD card slot. The microSD card slot is the old type of flip over slots so you will have to take care not to break it as it is very delicate. Comparing the Redmi 1S to the Mi3, the Mi3 seems and is much lighter to hold in the palm but is a bit more bulky and has sort of sharp edges.

Features and Performance :

In terms of features, the Redmi 1s has been decked up with a super fast and fluid 1.6 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor that is backed by 1GB of RAM and an Adreno 305 GPU. Since is it based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and MIUI, it is something different offered in the Indian market today and is comparatively faster and lighter in terms of performance. Certain default apps which come along with the device are MiTalk, GMail, Google+, Google Maps, Flipkart, YouTube and Google Chrome. The best part about the Xiaomi Redmi 1S when it comes to features is that everything can be customized upon the user’s liking and taste.

There are comments like “Xiaomi has duplicated the iPhone”, “The Mi3 is a copy of the iPhone” which should not be believed. We agree, the concept of the whole UI and functionality is used from iOS but the company has offered so much more as such an affordable price. For notifications, there is a small LED below the Home Button which lights up as an when there are notifications or is kept for charging. Another neat feature we liked is the charging mode where once the device is plugged into a power source and the screen is switched on, you will see a sort of a round charge meter.

Software :

The speciality of the Redmi 1S is “Lite Mode” where all the icons on the user interface are turned into big blocks which is a perfect Ui for elderly people who would be using a smartphone for the first time in their life. The Lite Mode does not have a notification drawer which makes things very complicated if you have experienced Android, and it is really very plain to look at.

The Redmi 1S has all of the same MIUI features that we saw on the Mi3 and many of the pre-installed apps can be uninstalled by the user without needing root. Still the MIUI feature for this phone is not upto the expectation of the users.

With MIUI, you get an app for Security that does the needful to protect the OS and the phone from the attack of malicious apps and viruses. The built-in permission feature prevents unauthorized apps from accessing your data without your permission. Besides, the exclusive Virus Scan helps you check and kill virus before installing any app.

The Xiaomi Redmi 1S has a 8MP primary camera with LED Flash and BSI Sensor. The 1.6MP secondary camera is just like a 5MP camera in terms of clicking selfies in low light conditions. We sometimes wonder whether the company has decked in some lighting component to give such clarity to images clicked with the secondary camera.

You will not find a better camera than this one at this price range. It’s not as fast as the Mi 3 camera, but more than adequate for casual shooting. All basic features like filters, flash options among many others are all integrated with the default camera application. Have a look at some of the images we clicked below and see the difference.

Battery  and Battery Life:

This is where we find the boat sailing in the middle. The battery takes almost 2.6 hours to go from 8% to 100% when we used the charging unit. If the device is charged using the USB cable to the PC then it takes almost the same time depending on the shedding of power supply to the PC and usage. We want to share that once fully charged, the phone’s battery lasted for over 15 hours in one go while using Wi-Fi and playing games for approximately 1-2 hours.

Verdict :

The Xiaomi Mi3 is a device which is priced way to higher than the Redmi 1S and if you are looking out to buy a phone withing the price range of Rs.10,000/- then you could save Rs.4,000/- and head in for a real neat device, i.e the Redmi 1S. There are other devices which are competing head-on with this device and we are really waiting for another device to be released over Flipkart to see what more Xiaomi has in store. The Redmi 1S was not boxed with earphones which makes it really bad in angle for new smartphone users but good for some as people who own smartphones already own couple of earphones which they can use. We would definitely say that the company is not looking at “innovation” but is focusing on something else that we would not like to reveal.
