Many smartphone users know that data speeds can vary widely over region and even network. But the main question which lies is how do the different carriers stack up against each other?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is hoping that the public can help figure this out using a new Android app which will preview next week. On Friday, the FCC said that the agenda for next Thursday’s open meeting will be first under new Chairman Tom Wheeler and it will feature a presentation on a new Android smartphone app that will be used to crowdsource measurements of mobile broadband speeds on a wide demographic area.

The FCC has announced that it would start measuring the performance of mobile networks. All four major wireless carriers, as well The Wireless Association (CTIA) have already agreed to participate in the app which is called the “FCC Speed Test”. At the moment it only works on Android and there is no information about when it will be available on the iPhone. According to source, Wheeler has said ensuring there is adequate competition in the broadband and wireless markets is among his top priorities.
