UC Mobile Browser is Back on the Play Store
The UC mobile browser is back up on the Google Play Store. The browser which was removed earlier has now been added back. UC browser which is a creation of UC Web, owned by mogul group Alibaba, was said to have been taken down from Google Play Store based on security issues that pointed towards data leaks. The company has altered their settings and has now announced a version that strictly aligns with the stringent policing that Google Play has with regard to the apps on their store.
UC Browser for Android was, in a surprise move, taken down from the Play Store early last week because of the security concerns that surrounded the application. There were numerous reports that held the Alibaba owned UC Web accountable for stealing sensitive user data and sending it to servers located in remote areas of China, without the consent and permission of the users.
UC Browser is not new to such allegations, as it was also scrutinised by the Indian Government officials back in August of this year. The Government had hinted towards the role of UC browser in initiating privacy allegations. A campaign was started with the aim to uncover the details behind the issue and to hold responsible all applications found to be culprits. It was also speculated that the browser may be banned by the Government if it failed to comply with regulations.
On the other side of the coin, UC Web has vehemently denied these allegations. The company had quoted a couple of months ago that it was a standard practice in the industry to collect user data to ensure that they are provided with local services. Now, they are claiming to offer private browsing in an updated version of the application.
“Over the last 5 years we have been committed to providing flawless & secure browsing experience to our consumers in India and with 100 million monthly active users, we are taking rapid strides forward. During the brief absence of UC Browser on Play Store, we continued to meticulously check our technical settings while also witnessing an uninterrupted passion of our users for the product, who looked upon the alternative version, UC Browser Mini, and made it to the top of ‘Free Apps’ category on the Play Store.”
Young Li, Head International Business Department Alibaba
Another thing to be noted here is that the UC browser has a loyal fan following here in India as it ranks 6th in the list of most downloaded Android apps within the country. The company also claims to have around 100 million active users in India on a monthly basis.
