What with the advent of technology in our lives, we are unable to live without gadgets that have now become as important to us as our food or water.  I mean, even imagining your life without your smartphone is enough to give some us panic attacks-right? However, there are situations where we find ourselves badly in need of our beloved phone and to our horror we cannot seem to find it. Why? Because in an unfortunate moment you decided that the ringer was too loud for your taste and you switched it off. Or maybe you were about to go in a very important meeting and switching your phone to the vibration mode was a necessity – irritating your boss with the ringing phone is probably not the best course of action for your career. So now you have a phone somewhere but you cannot seem to locate it because the ringer is off.

This is a situation where we all find ourselves one time or the other and each time it happens to us we want some superhuman power to turn on the ringer of our phone. Well, what if I told you that it is possible. Not the superhuman part of course, but you can still get your phone to switch from silent or vibration mode to the ringer without even touching it. How nice it would be that you just have to borrow your colleague’s phone and the phone will do that task for you.

Still sceptical about the whole idea-don’t be. Meet Agastya, a new Android app that allow users to perform various tasks on his or her phone ‘remotely’ from another phone through simple SMS commands.  Getting excited, well hold on to your seats because the good news continues- the other phone through which you are sending the commands need not be running Android.  Yes, you heard it correctly, even the most basic Nokia 1100 will do the work jus fine- and either phones do not require GPS or data plans.

By now you are probably ecstatic and you should be with good reason. The workflow on this app is very easy. All you need to do is send an SMS command from another phone to your android smartphones in a predefined format and the app will react accordingly.  I am sure you are still getting to grips with this , so let me give you a simple example, if you send a command which spells ‘ringer’ to your phone than it would turn on the ringer while ‘silent’ would put the phone to silent mode.

This is cool right; well this app can do much more. Agastya does not just use the SMS command to turn on or switch off your vibrator or silent mode, this will also help you in retrieving your missed calls lists or your incoming text messages, using – oh yes you got it right-SMS.  This one feature of this app will come in quite handy for those of you who won more than one phone. Now you can easily check your call logs or your SMS logs of your secondary phone from the one that is in your pocket.

Now let me make your work a bit simpler, for you. Here is a complete list of SMS commands that you can use on your Android phone via the Agastya app:

  • RINGER – Turn on the ringer
  • SILENT – Turn off the phone’s ringer
  • LAST CALLS – Retrieve the last five missed /received/dialled numbers
  • IMEI – Get the IMEI number of your phone
  • LAST MESSAGES- Retrieve the last 5 text messages received on your phone
  • Contact- Get the contact number of a person from your phone book

If you are grappling as to why you will need your IMEI number, then let me enlighten you, this number can help you block a stolen phone by accessing the mobile network.  Type #06#to know the IMEI of your existing phone.

Now I am not trying to burst your happy bubble, but let me inform you that Agastya is not the first app that offers these features. In fact where’s my droid app – one of the more popular app will not only turn on or off the ringer for you, but can also send you your phone’s current GPS location via SMS.  While this app is more inclined towards locating your lost phone – Agastya works like a command console through which you can jump between your phone states or fetch even a remote contact from the phone book. The EMI feature of the phone is great if you need to blacklist your stolen phone. Agastya app works fine on Android app 2.2 and above

I tried this app myself and I was quite happy with the results. Agastya did work as advertised and the SMS commands worked perfectly, the only glitch was that the app crashed once.
