HTC RE poses challenge to GoPro
HTC has unveiled a new camera called the RE which is a cylindrical design that includes a sensor that automatically turns the device on when it is picked up with only two button controls on the body. The HTC RE can be used via an app that wirelessly connects tablets and smartphones to stream the footage live and re-play it later. We presume that the RE would directly compete with the GoPro. The HTC RE has the potential to entirely change the face of mobile photography and recording.
HTC also unveiled the Desire Eye which is an Android powered device that has both 13MP primary camera as well as secondary camera at New York. The company has reported a huge net income of $640 million New Taiwan Dollars for the last quarter.
The HTC RE does not have a viewfinder and features a 16MP camera that is capable of shooting in 1080p which is “Full-HD” video at normal speed and 720p in slow motion. Technically, a tap of the shutter button at the base captures a photo and a longer press on the same button starts recording a video. A switch on the side allows users to change the video mode between real speed and slow motion and even time lapse. There is no display screen and your Android smartphone or tablet will pose as a screen for the same. An SDcard provision has been made for storage and at the same time media can be streamed live to YouTube also. The RE has gone through the IPX7 waterproof certification and has been rated which means that the device can be submerged in water to a depth of 1m (3.3ft) for up to half an hour (approximately).
As far as looks go, the RE looks like an asthma inhaler or even a snorkel. HTC is going to have a tough time competing with the GoPro. GoPro is a very established brand which has been selling mountable waterproof camera for a long time now and has recently announced a cheaper product that will likely cost less than what HTC will price the RE.
GoPro recently announced new models which include the Hero4 Black which can capture video in 4K that means four times the resolution of the RE and is waterproof to 40m having a 12MP sensor with a remote control costing £370.

I am a big Android fan and I make no bones about it. This is why I am very happy whenever I meet an Apple-to-Android convert. The one common reason because of which these converts switched to an Android, include words like ‘iTunes’ and ‘oppression’. The best thing about Android for me is the unrestricted […]
